Poppy Montgomery

Hi, my name is Poppy Montgomery at D1 - Washington State University, WA.

College:
I’m a student-athlete on the WSU rowing team. Freshman year, our 2v4+ crew took 2nd place at the WCC Championships, which was an incredible way to kick off my college racing career. This year I’ve continued to grow as an athlete and teammate, and we just wrapped up my sophomore season yesterday with another 2nd place at the WCC. I’m already looking ahead to summer training and what we can accomplish.

High School:
I was first introduced to rowing the summer of 2019 after I moved from the UK. Since then I’ve taken leading roles rowing sweep, scull, and bowing a variety of boat classes at Pocock Rowing and at Holy Names Academy in Seattle, WA.

I raced four years competitively on the varsity High School team, and I won the coaches’ prize in Freshman year for most improved. In my Sophomore year, I was selected from 60 athletes in our HS crew program to represent Holy Names at major races including Head of the Charles (securing our spot for 2022) and at US Youth Nationals placing 10th in the nation at U17 8+ (seat 7). In my Junior year, I competed in a 4+ at the HOCR, beating our previous year's Holy Names 4+ boat by over a minute, and placed 6th at US Nationals in 2V 8+. As a senior I raced in the 1V 8+ and secured our spot again.

About Me:
Throughout my life I’ve played a lot of sports including gymnastics (competing at state champs), netball, triathlons, and snowboarding. But rowing is my passion because I’m a highly focused, hard working, motivated athlete comfortable performing individually as well as part of the team. I like to train hard, and I love the competition. I’m excited for what’s ahead and the progress I can keep making both in my academic program at WSU and in daily training.

    (Age 16) We were excluded from the Women's U17 8+ final for having a non-age compliant coxswain. We subsequently raced with a fully compliant crew in an exhibition heat at the end of the day in very similar conditions to the official A final - flat and calm, with very little direct competition. The last qualified crew in our event finished with an 8:00.6, the winning crew finished with a 7:45.7, and we finished exhibition with a 7:12.6.
